We’re making a movie!

Thanks to all the backers of our successful Kickstarter campaign (which ends Friday) we have raised enough money to complete a few more shoots, including heading to Chicago to record an interview with Steve Albini who recorded Rye Coalition’s On Top and Jersey Girls (Tiger Style, 2002). Two members of Rye- Dave Leto and Ralph Cuseglio, along with The Want have formed a new band called Cold Fur. They are set to record their debut album with Albini this Fall.

Here’s a song off of “On Top” from the Rye Coalition: live & in-person celebrating 70 years of Jack Leto dvd (available only through kickstarter)!

Stop Eating While I’m Smoking (video)

In case you have never seen this, Tiger Style records/ Insound has allowed us to use the amazing video made by animator Devin Flynn from Rye Coalition’s 2003 “Jersey Girls” EP (recorded at Electrical Audio by Steve Albini) in the documentary. Serious fun. Enjoy!

Q: When will Rye Coalition play again? A: that’s up to YOU!

Rye Coalition really want to see our Kickstarter fundraiser work so this movie can finally get finished. They have generously agreed to play ONE MORE SHOW to a funder who pledges the entire kickstarter goal (5500), thereby ensuring our success. If you know any promoters who might be interested in Rye Coalition for a festival, or perhaps a 13-yr old who has a hankering to breeze through their parents mulah to book the most un-jewish bar mitzvah band ever, then please– let them know about us!

This is big– Rye has only played one show in five years, and it was the “Rye Coalition live & in-person: celebrating 70 years of Jack Leto” sold-out Maxwells show, which we are offering here on DVD as a kickstarter reward for $25. The trailer for the DVD is viewable below. They are worth every penny.

To quote photographer James Damion: “I saw Rye a handful of times in the 90′s and was there for their reunion show at Maxwells. They pour every morsel of energy, emotion and sweat into each and every song. Just a balls out, in-your-face Rock n’ Roll apocalypse.”

There’s a lot of other projects out there on kickstarter. But we hope you vote for us. Vote for rock!

Limited edition artwork by Dan Rumain for Rye Coalition

Rye Coalition postcard by Dan RumainWith the same ardent affection as a mother for her incorrigible kid, artist Dan Rumain has been Rye Coalition’s designer, muse, roadie, photographer, and friend for almost 20 years.

He’s avidly labored over T-shirt designs, album covers, posters, and more for nothing more than a couple chicken parm sandwiches and the satisfaction of helping his NJ brothers out.

Dan’s contributed a couple of choice items for our kickstarter campaign, and we couldn’t be more grateful. An autographed, limited edition 6 color, 11x17in screen print of the “Rye Coalition Live at Maxwellsshow poster printed by Joe Herbick at Ghetto Press (Baltimore, MD) is available for the $50 pledge (pictured below). The poster that we are giving away is a hand pulled screen print of a hand-rendered acrylic painting of Jack and Donna Leto’s (parents of Rye drummers Dave and Gregg Leto) wedding picture. The Rye show was Jack’s 70th birthday wish.

Dan’s “crows” T-shirt is available for a $35 pledge, also VERY limited quantity! Last but certainly not least, I asked Dan to design a new postcard to send anyone who donates $5 or more. His “Rye through time” collage of the Hard Luck 5 in front of the Newark Bay Bridge pictured above) is just… beautiful. We’ll be sending it to everyone along with a special message from Rye on the verso. I’d say “backside”, but I don’t want to encourage you all.

More of Dan’s amazing talents can be seen at http://danielrumain.wordpress.com/

You can pledge at any time, for any amount, towards making this documentary happen at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/matzorific/rye-coalition-the-story-of-the-hard-luck-5-rockume

Rye Coalition’s Sound City Studio session with Dave Grohl, on DVD

In 2003 Rye Coalition had just signed to a major label. They had been touring with Queens of the Stone Age, and a friend of a friend passed their music on to Foo Fighters/rock maven Dave Grohl who wanted to produce their first album on Dreamworks. The band flew out to L.A to record “Curses“ at the legendary Sound City Studios. Hilarity, beer bongs, slow jams, and hard luck antics ensued… and we got most of it on tape.

Midway through the recording, Dreamworks dissolved their music label. Eventually, the album found a home at Charles Maggio’s Gern Blandsten label. Included on the album was a dvd of the “making of” Curses and concert footage from the Rye Coalition/ Foo Fighters European tour. The director’s cut of this video is available only through kickstarter for a $100 pledge, which also gets you the Rye Coalition live DVD at Maxwells this year and other good stuffs. Check it out.

A Father’s Day special

Jack Leto, father to Rye members Dave and Gregg Leto, had one wish for his 70th birthday: to see Rye Coalition play one more time. I was there to capture the moment he made his request. We were all in Jersey City celebrating Dave and Pam Leto’s 4-year old’s birthday at Hamilton Park. Rye hadn’t played a show since 2006. But there was an immediate agreement to make this show happen– whatever it might take.

The Hard Luck Five all had their own musical projects going on by now– Dave and Ralph teamed up with The Want to form “Cold Fur”; and Justin, Herb, and Jon (along with drummer Nick Ferrante) had been playing in The Black Hollies for the past several years. Amazingly, they all still share a rehearsal space, and John Z (longtime roadie) texted me from the first Rye practice in over 5 years, saying “this show is going to be epic.” And indeed it was.

On February 19, 2011, Rye Coalition played to a sold-out crowd at their home-base– Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ (a club which had once banned them) and played over 20 songs in chronological order from 1996′s Karp/Rye split to 2006′s Curses lp. We filmed it with multiple-cameras (thanks to fans Alisa, Evan & Leah) and Ryan Gross of Killing Horse records recorded the entire 2-hour plus set. Paul Fig (Coheed & Cambria, Bluebird, Mars Volta) mixed it, and we present it to you for your viewing pleasure– “Rye Coalition live & in-person: celebrating 70 years of Jack Leto.” This dvd is only available by pledging online at kickstarter.com.

Rye burgers

herburgerralphburgerDleeburgerjonburger
Rye Coalition loves burgers. Hamburgers, Cheeseburgers, veggie burgers, Rutts Hut dog in a hamburger bun… I noticed this trend first when I was touring with the band, then the references kept popping up. When I was asked to escort a double-double animal style In ‘N Out burger back from LA to NJ in a freezerbag, i knew it wasn’t just my imagination.
Rachael Pleet, the designer who gave us the artwork from 1996′s Rye Coalition/Karp split cd, independently (we swear) came up with the idea to design each of the guys in Rye as a burger. So she did. So… we don’t know where this is going, but if you like it as much as we do, you can pledge on Kickstarter to be “burgerized” by Rachael.

You can also get a limited edition digital print of the Karp/Rye split artwork from her too. Thanks, Rachael!
